The math changed — here's the honest version
For a decade, the standard solar pitch leaned on a 30% federal tax credit that knocked thousands off the price. That residential credit ended for systems placed in service after 2025, which pushed payback periods meaningfully longer for anyone buying now. Some states and utilities still offer their own incentives — that's what the incentives field is for — but the default answer got harder, and any sales pitch still quoting "30% back from the government" on a home purchase deserves skepticism.
What still works in solar's favor: panel prices have fallen for years, electricity rates keep climbing, and a system offsets bills for 25+ years. The calculator races those forces against your upfront cost over the years you'll actually be in the house.
What tilts the answer
- Your electric rate. Solar pays best where power is expensive. The same roof that's marginal at 12¢/kWh is compelling at 30¢.
- How your utility credits exports. Full-value net metering supercharges savings; states that pay wholesale rates for exported power weaken them. Ask your utility which regime applies — it can swing the offset percentage dramatically.
- Roof reality. Age, shading, and orientation. If the roof needs replacing in five years, replace it first — removing and reinstalling panels costs thousands.
- Cash vs. loan vs. lease. This model assumes buying. Solar loans add interest that stretches payback. Leases and power-purchase agreements shift the math entirely and can complicate selling the house — read those contracts hard.
Common questions
Do panels really last 25 years?
Quality panels are typically warrantied for 25 years and degrade slowly — often under 0.5% output per year. The inverter is the component that usually needs replacing once along the way; budget roughly $1,500–3,000 for it.
Should I add a battery?
Batteries add thousands and mostly buy backup power and rate-shifting, not raw savings. In outage-prone areas or under time-of-use rates they can make sense; run them as their own separate decision.
Are the door-to-door quotes trustworthy?
Get three independent quotes and compare price per watt. Door-to-door and lead-generation channels are consistently the most expensive way to buy the identical hardware.
